I've lived in Kansas and the Midwest for most of my life. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1993 and my Master of Science in Speech Pathology from the University of Central Missouri in 1996. I worked as a speech pathologist from 1996-2001. I am currently in dentistry and I have been working for an oral surgeon for 7 years.
My husband and I have been married for 22 years and we have three children together; Brandon (20), Luke (18), Faith (15). Our family has lived in Shawnee since 2003 and our children have attended Riverview Elementary, Mill Creek Middle School, Mill Valley High School, and De Soto High School. Our children had wonderful teachers and we've had a great experience in the De Soto School District.
The 2020-2021 school year was challenging for students, teachers, and families with regard to the pandemic. We've followed CDC, KDHE and JCDHE guidelines since March 2020. We followed protocols and procedures to keep our families safe. After our personal experience with COVID-19 during the school year, I started to question the role of local, state and federal government in our personal health decisions and life.
Since the beginning of the “pandemic,” we've learned about the negative side effects of isolating our children at home, social distancing and wearing masks. It was very frustrating when on April 30, 2021, the board decided to keep the mask mandates in place until the end of the school year. It felt like student and parent freedoms were being ignored and it was time to speak up. I wanted to be a voice for my kids.
